#1 Georgia turns the ball over 3 times as Auburn shocks Bulldogs 27-24 with last-second field goal
The No. 1 team in the country has lost two weeks in a row.
Just seven days after beating No. 6 Alabama to move into the top spot in the AP Top 25, Georgia QB Gunner Stockton turned the ball over three times and the Tigers scored a field goal as time expired for a 27-24 victory.

Alex McPherson’s game-winning kick was triggered by a Stockton fumble. After Georgia’s defense gave the Bulldogs a chance to win, Stockton fumbled the ball while running behind center Drew Bobo with 58 seconds left.
McPherson’s 34-yard kick was also 15 yards shorter than it could have been thanks to Gabe Harris roughing up the passer penalty on Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown with 14 seconds left. It was the third personal foul by a Georgian player.
The Bulldogs moved into first place after Texas lost to unranked rival Oklahoma. On Saturday, it was Auburn’s turn to play the role of first-place spoiler. It was the Tigers’ first victory in the annual series since 2017 and the victory marks the first time since 1990 that the No. 1 team in the AP poll has lost to an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks.

Auburn scored 24 straight points to take a 24-14 lead on a Brown TD run. While the Tigers scored four times in six possessions, Georgia had three punts, two interceptions and a missed field goal on its six significant drives after scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions.
It was a tough game for Stockton, who had one of the best games of his career in Georgia’s win over Alabama. A week ago, Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards and threw a touchdown and an interception while rushing to score. On Saturday, he completed 22 of 34 passes for 272 yards with two passing touchdowns to go along with his three turnovers.
Auburn’s biggest win in years
Can Auburn fans start to have some optimism? It’s been a tough time for the Tigers with five straight losing seasons since Gus Malzahn was fired near the end of a 6-5 2020 campaign.

Alex Golesh was hired after the 2025 season following the firing of Hugh Freeze with three games remaining in the season. Freeze took over for Bryan Harsin, who only played 21 games before being fired.
Before Saturday, Auburn hadn’t beaten a ranked opponent since the end of the 2024 season when it shocked No. 15 Texas A&M 43-41. It was the team’s first win against a ranked opponent since Auburn defeated then-No. 10 Ole Miss in 2021.
Yes, it’s been a tough time on the Plains, as teams like Missouri and Vanderbilt posted double-digit winning seasons during that span, while Auburn floundered.
But now you can start to see how Auburn can find its way in the crowded SEC environment. Especially if he can pull off another win in October. The Tigers have No. 22 LSU in Week 8 before hosting No. 9 Ole Miss on Halloween.

Georgia, meanwhile, squandered the big advantage it gained from that Alabama victory. Every team in the SEC now has at least one conference loss, while seven teams have two losses. If you want to try to decipher the conference mid-season, good luck. It really became unpredictable.
