1 person killed, 8 others injured in Haverford Township crash caught on camera
HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) — A man was killed and eight other people were injured Saturday in a multi-vehicle crash that damaged 16 vehicles in Haverford Township, police said.
Haverford Township Police Chief John Viola said the crash started at Darby Road and West Chester Pike and ended about 1.5 miles away at West Chester Pike and Eagle Road around 12:15 p.m.
Police believe the driver of a gray pickup truck, a man in his 60s, had a medical emergency before the crash.
Viola said the driver began driving erratically at a high speed and struck several vehicles along the road.
Surveillance video captured the end of the crash, showing the pickup truck driving down the street, colliding with stopped vehicles, flipping onto its side and eventually crashing into a U-Haul truck.
Witnesses described the incident as chaotic.
“It’s a very sad thing that happened,” said Yusuf Peters of Upper Darby.
Rob Rothacker of Bethlehem said: “It was just bang, bang, bang, bang. I looked in my rearview mirror and cars were going left and right.”
Another witness said: “Then the next thing you know, the sound of crashing, the sound of glass, the crushing of metal. »
Viola said the scale of the accident was striking.
“I would say breathtaking. It takes you back a little bit to have to take in the whole scene and realize how many people were injured here and how many cars were heavily damaged,” he said.
Authorities said eight people were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Viola said those who were hospitalized are expected to recover.
One person involved in the accident said: “I feel very happy to be able to escape. »
Drivers whose vehicles were damaged said they could be repaired.
“Regardless, this is a car that could be replaced. This guy can’t be replaced. Hopefully all these other people that went to the hospital will pull through,” Rothacker said.
