4 shocking quotes from Kyle Whittingham after Michigan’s loss to Indiana
Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham has won plenty of games in his career, but all there has been during his time at Michigan has been ineptitude.
After Michigan’s 13-6 loss to Indiana, Whittingham made some questionable quotes lacking a sense of urgency.
A pretty good football team?
Quote from Whittingham: “If it’s the No. 6 team in the country, then we’re pretty good. We’re a pretty good football team, even though we’re sitting here at, what, 4-3.”
Trevor’s point of view: No, that’s not how it works. Your attack isn’t even that bad. It’s one of the worst in the country and one of the worst in Michigan history at this point. You are 4-3 for a reason. That’s because Michigan’s offense is painful to watch.
Whittingham won’t say offensive coordinator Jason Beck is in trouble
Quote from Whittingham: “Well, last year, Jason was exceptional. And we had exceptional results. And so I’m not going to say he’s struggling.”
Trevor’s point of view: Well, he’s struggling and last year means absolutely nothing. It’s like saying you had a great steak at Outback last year and they burned it the last seven times you’ve been there, but the food is still top notch! To say Beck is struggling would be an understatement, but Whittingham can’t even say he is.
Whittingham’s evaluation of third baseman’s pass attempt to an offensive lineman that ended in a sack
Quote from Whittingham: “No, it wasn’t a good decision at the time. Do I have the option to cancel? I can cancel anything in the entire program. And so, like I said, it’s on me. But it was a very disappointing outcome and a call that I know Jason wants to have back because it was really damaging.”
Trevor’s point of view: If Whittingham can overturn anything in the program, why wouldn’t he overturn such a horrible play before the ball is snapped? Jason Beck continues to use the Rhino package (additional offensive lineman) and continues to tout that it’s one of the best lineups in Michigan – there’s no better when you’re #125 in total offense. All Michigan had to do was run it up the gut for a yard, instead Beck opted for trickery against an excellent IU defense. This put Tommy Carr at a disadvantage in his first career start. The Whittingham era has been defined by his inaction thus far in key situations. Why the hell wouldn’t he intervene? This room was so bad. In fact, this is one of the worst actions I have ever seen in this type of situation.
Whittingham doesn’t judge a season game by game
Whittingham Quote: “I don’t judge the season by segments or game by game. Just look at the body of work.”
Trevor’s point of view: What?! Football is the shortest sports season of all. If you don’t judge by game, quarter by quarter and game by game, what are you doing? Michigan is seven games into the season, which is enough “work” to make harsh but true judgments. Among them, Jason Beck should not be Michigan’s offensive coordinator and Kyle Whittingham’s quotes are not going to inspire the locker room. What is happening? I don’t know and Whittingham certainly doesn’t know.
