49ers release Super Bowl champion before Seahawks game
The San Francisco 49ers made another defensive line move ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. As the team prepares for tough division competition, the latest roster move comes as San Francisco works to bolster its options up front.
The 49ers have suffered several injuries on the defensive line early in the 2026 NFL season. Getting healthy bodies back on the field could prove important as they prepare for Seattle, with questions surrounding their pass rush.
The latest trade also brings attention to a veteran defenseman whose time with the team is over.

Mykel Williams nears return for 49ers
The roster move creates a spot for defensive lineman Mykel Williams who returns from the physically unable to perform list.
The former first-round pick is working toward a return after missing the first few weeks of the season.
Williams recorded 20 tackles and a sack in nine games during his rookie season. He injured his knee in November 2025 and spent the offseason working toward his return.
