5-year-old Oregon school shooting victim identified by family
One of the victims killed in the Oregon elementary school shooting Thursday was identified as 5-year-old Rhoam Summer, according to fundraisers and a social media post from his father.
Kelik Summer posted in a Facebook group Thursday evening that it was “the worst day of my life. My son Rhoam was killed in a school shooting. We are broken and lost, but we are surrounded by friends and family who keep us safe.”
Rhoam Summer was killed at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, after a 16-year-old suspect opened fire. Two other children – aged 8 and 11 – and a teacher were also killed the filming.
A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to St. Charles Medical Center with serious injuries. Their names were not immediately released.
The suspect was identified like John Griffin, of Bend, Oregon, two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told CBS News. He was shot by a passerby, police said. There was no word on a motive and police could not say Thursday evening whether the suspect had a connection to the school.
The family of Kaylub Giamancowho identified himself as the man who shot and killed the suspect, told CBS News in a statement Friday that he was “not looking for recognition” and instead expressed gratitude to first responders, school staff and the community for the “outpouring of love and support.” Her two daughters attend Silver Rail Elementary School.
Police are expected to hold a news conference Friday at 2 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET).
Memorials with flowers, balloons and stuffed animals appeared around the school, located in a neighborhood full of newly built homes.
Bend, with a population of approximately 100,000, is the largest city in Central Oregon. Surrounded by mountains, its population has grown over the past three decades and is a center for tourism and outdoor recreation, about 125 miles southeast of Portland.
