In a written statement to the University of Delaware community, school President Laura Carlson said she was grateful to Newark police, UD police and first responders from across the county and state for their quick response, which she said provided life-saving care on scene.

Carlson said the school will provide updates through the Campus Alerts page.

She also said resources would be made available to students and community members who may have witnessed the violence.

This is the 31st mass shooting in Delaware, and the first in Newark, since early 2013, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

They define a mass shooting as 4 or more people injured in a single event, not including the shooter.

20 of them were in Wilmington, 5 in Dover, 2 in the Prices Corner area and 1 each in Harrington, Bear, Milford and now Newark.
