69-car pileup leaves several injured on South Carolina bridge
LAKE MARION, SC (WBTV) – A 69-car pileup reportedly injured several people on a bridge in South Carolina Thursday.
The massive October 1 pileup occurred on the I-95 bridge over Lake Marion on the southbound side from Clarendon County to Orangeburg County. Sister station SIE reported that heavy fog significantly reduced visibility, giving drivers no time to stop.
Officials told WIS that 92 vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the accident, 69 of which were involved in the wreck. Of those 69, 54 were passenger vehicles, while 15 were tractor-trailers.
The wreck caused such a mess that first responders reportedly had to walk to the wrecked vehicles and use portable fire extinguishers to put out the flames.
WIS reported that at least two people were seriously injured, including one who had to be airlifted to hospital. No deaths have been reported.
Crews worked for more than 15 hours to clear the rubble.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol was investigating the crash.
