There are seasonal gaps and seasonal chasms. This one is the latter. Four years after season 1, filming for season 2 of a once-popular series is set to begin this fall. And it’s a series that viewers may have not only forgotten about, but didn’t even know was renewed.
The show is The observerthe mystery thriller series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan starring Naomi Watts and Bobby Canavale. They will return alongside their previous co-stars Margo Martindale and Isabel Gravitt. The observer was originally meant to be a miniseries, but posting big numbers like 125 million hours in its first week in October, Netflix renewed it for a second season the following month.
The hiatus is so long that Ryan Murphy has now ended his overall contract with Netflix and Ian Brennan will be the showrunner of season 2 of The observer. He also directs another Murphy series, Monsterthe killer anthology that critics and audiences claim to hate, but still does big numbers on the service.
If filming only begins now, it will likely be at least five years between seasons of The Watcher. The show wasn’t exactly a critical or audience darling, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 54% and 36%, respectively. I remember watching it, but I don’t remember anything since it aired four years ago and it was barely good enough to be burned into my brain.

The five-year gap would be slightly less than the six-year gap between seasons of Limit your enthusiasm, although the difference is that many fans were eager to see this return. I don’t know how many people would say the same thing about The Watchman, probably about the 145th most memorable show made by Netflix. The Deadline article reporting the news gives no indication as to why it took so long for this to happen. It appears this has something to do with Murphy’s departure from Netflix, since he co-wrote six of the seven episodes with Ian Brennan, which clearly won’t be the case again. However, five years is ridiculous.
There are undoubtedly dozens of shows that fans want to see return after being canceled in just one season. It seems particularly unfair that a show that was supposed to end after a season returns. Promising series like 1899, I don’t agree with that And Teen Bounty Hunters come to mind. However, Netflix is best known for cutting many shows after two seasons. This seems rather far-fetched The observer would get a third, but who knows, maybe we’ll see one in 2032.
