A viral arrest video has shocked viewers. now the legal file is moving forward
An Arizona State University student whose arrest was captured in a viral video now faces misdemeanor charges, months after the confrontation sparked widespread online debate over police use of force. The case centers on Eryn Bonner, an ASU senior and member of the school’s stunt team, who was involved in a late-night incident in Tempe on July 19, abc15.com reported.
According to Tempe police, officers were in the process of arresting other people when Bonner returned to the scene after being ordered to stay away. Videos recorded by bystanders and police cameras show the situation quickly becoming physical. Police say Bonner interfered with officers and punched an officer during the fight, while his attorney argues the officers used unnecessary force, fox10phoenix.com said.
The video shows Bonner pushed to the ground and restrained during the arrest. Photos subsequently released showed bruising on his face. The footage spread widely on social media and led to calls for an independent review of the incident.
Maricopa County prosecutors previously declined to pursue criminal charges. However, Tempe prosecutors later filed misdemeanor charges against Bonner, including disorderly conduct and interfering with police, sacbee.com reported.
Bonner’s attorney, Benjamin Taylor, criticized the decision and called for the firing of the arresting officer. Police officials defended the officers’ actions and said the entire incident was under review. The Tempe Police Department says an internal investigation is still ongoing and all available evidence will be reviewed before making any final conclusions.
