Activision marketing head says Modern Warfare 4 faces ‘call tax’

A new Call of Duty has been released every fall for over 20 years. While still an annual bestseller, the franchise’s cultural cachet has evolved over the past 10 years. With the rise of live gaming, Call of Duty has become its own massive silo within the broader world of online multiplayer. Where new Call of Duty rReleases were once treated as technological showcases, now they look more like the arrival of a new Mad Or NBA 2K. Tyler Bahl, Activision’s chief marketing officer, calls it the Call of Duty tax.

“We get the media coverage,” he said in a new interview with The gaming business. “But we call it the Call of Duty tax, when we think about the reviews or the welcome. There’s obviously a lot of fandom around indie games and enthusiasm for the new games that appear on Steam every day. And Call of Dutyhas been around for a very long time, and with that, people sometimes forget that there is so much work that goes into making these games. There are 4,500 employees here trying to provide the best experience possible.

Like every new annualized release of a sports franchise, which is often poorly rated but sells spectacularly, Call of Duty games rarely get good reviews from critics these days. Once consistently in the 70s and 80s on Metacritic, the shooter series is now just as likely to appear in the mid-60s, a yellow-coded range that screams “bad game” in a landscape saturated with incredible games. 2024 Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 bucked that trend with an 83. The follow-up from last year, Black Ops 7was a 65. And that of 2023 Modern Warfare 3This year’s game is a sequel, dropped to a Metacritic score of 56, the franchise’s lowest, on PS5.

“We have 100 million free players, we’ve sold 500 million units, it’s one of the biggest franchises of all time and we have a billion downloads on mobile,” Bahl said. “And so, I think, that huge audience sometimes gets overlooked or just becomes status quo. There’s craftsmanship in these games, and the dedication of the teams was something we wanted to show this year with the marketing.”

But the Call of Duty the tax is not just about ambiance. Regardless of annoyed reviews or the changing media landscape around live game releases, Call of DutyThe difficulties are also manifested in the number of players. The gaming business highlights data estimates from Ampere Analysis that show a massive drop in monthly active users for Call of Duty since the launch of Black Ops 7. Over the summer, it dropped to around 20 million players, half of what it was before. The only thing that saved it was the surprise release of ports for Black Ops 1 And 2a dose of nostalgia and a reminder of the good old days when Call of Duty was one of the best, both commercially and culturally.

“It wasn’t something our community was looking for,” Bahl said of Black Ops 7. “They wanted something new, and even though there were different time settings and ways to play the game with new features, that change in tone is something they were looking for. So we’ve already stated that a future title would be a new sub-franchise and we’ve already laid the groundwork. But we’re really excited to do it. Modern Warfare 4and this responds to some of these comments.

The new Modern warfare The campaign will go live for players who purchase the Early Access Edition starting October 16.
