Actress Christina Applegate reveals she was misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis | Christine Applegate
After becoming a vocal advocate for multiple sclerosis awareness and chronicling her struggles in a moving memoir released in March, Emmy-winning actress Christina Applegate revealed that she doesn’t have the debilitating autoimmune disease after all.
Applegate, 54, made the stunning announcement in an episode of her podcast MeSsy, recorded with fellow actor Jamie-Lynn Sigler, posted to YouTube on Tuesday.
“I’m back to square one – I don’t know what’s happening to me,” she said through tears.
Applegate remembers the moment she discovered the misdiagnosis during a visit to her doctor.
“She came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS.’ I wasn’t happy at all. I had all the symptoms of someone with MS. Each.
“I haven’t gotten better. I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I’m still here. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magic happened.
“It’s weird because I feel like I’ve let everyone down. It’s this weird feeling of becoming this, you and I, the poster children of MS. Everything I did, I had a fucking reason why my day sucked every day.
“And now I don’t have a reason anymore. It’s very annoying and it’s really confusing to me.”
Applegate revealed in 2021 that she had been diagnosed with MS. In an interview with People magazine promoting her memoir, titled You With the Sad Eyes, Apple said she was largely confined to bed due to her diagnosed condition.
She is known for her roles in the television series Married… with Children and Dead to Me – as well as the films Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead.
Applegate also worked on the television show Friends and won a 2002 Emmy for Outstanding Guest Role in a Comedy Series.
She retired from acting two years after her 2021 MS diagnosis, when she finished her role in Dead to Me.
