Adam Driver says ‘the ship has sailed’ in ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’
Bad news for “Star Wars” fans: Adam Driver cancels any possibility of returning as Kylo Ren to the galaxy.
On a recent episode of “The Rich Eisen Show,” Eisen asked Driver if he thought he would play the villain again in the franchise. The “Girls” actor responded, “Yeah, that’s it… No more ‘Star Wars.’” We “tried to do one more,” Driver said, “but they say, ‘No, he’s dead,'” referring to Disney studio executives Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, who rejected a script for a standalone film centered on Kylo Ren that he had pitched with Steven Soderbergh.
“I always wanted to do another Star Wars,” Driver said at the time. “We pitched the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our point of view and why we were doing it. We pitched it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was it.”
During the interview, Driver went on to reiterate that Soderbergh was attached to direct and that “we worked on it for a few years, really and seriously. We had a script together that was really good with Scott Burns, Rebecca Blunt, Soderbergh and me. We all worked on it… It was great. It was really cool. But you know, I’m not the one calling the shots.”
Eisen then asked Driver if he would come back if someone were to “resurrect” the project. “If they wanted to, fine. But we’re not…It’s not our decision,” Driver said. “I think the ship has sailed, though.” Driver acknowledged the “fan response” to the abandoned film, which he described as “pretty incredible.” I didn’t expect there to be billboards and people flying over Disney and things like that. It was pretty cool.
Around the time news of the film broke, a group of “Star Wars” fans paid for a plane to fly a banner reading “Save The Hunt for Ben Solo” over Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.
In April, Soderbergh shared a similar sentiment to Driver, saying the film “would have happened,” “if it had to happen.”
