After its impressive performance in Spanish cinemas, The Black Bola is preparing its next release on Netflix. The film, which has secured a place among Spain’s highest-grossing national productions, now has a confirmed release date. Audiences will be able to watch the queer epic on the platform starting next month.
La Bola Negra arrives on Netflix in early December
Spanish drama La Bola Negra is set to debut on Netflix on December 2, 2026, following a successful theatrical release. Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2026. Its arrival on the streaming platform follows an impressive performance at the Spanish domestic box office, where it secured a notable position among the country’s best-performing films.
Taking place over three distinct years – 1932, 1937 and 2017 – La Bola Negra follows the lives of Carlos, Sebastián and Alberto, each navigating personal struggles shaped by the times in which they live. While Carlos yearns for freedom to be accepted, Sebastián’s romantic life unfolds against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. Meanwhile, Alberto embarks on a journey that leads him to an unexpected revelation about his family’s past.
The three storylines intersect through the common themes of sexuality, social prejudice, violence and heritage. The film features an ensemble cast, including Guitarricadelafuente as Sebastián, Carlos González as Alberto, Miguel Bernardeau as Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, Milo Quifes as Carlos, Lola Dueñas as Teresa and Penélope Cruz as Nené Romero, among others.
The film also received largely positive reviews from critics and audiences. La Bola Negra currently holds an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 129 reviews. Its audience reception was even stronger, with an audience score of 97%.
As ComingSoon previously reported, the film enjoyed a particularly impressive theatrical run in its home country. It grossed $43.4 million worldwide, including €36.7 million in Spain, where it sold more than 5.5 million tickets.
The production became the highest-grossing Spanish domestic release of 2026. Additionally, it ranks as the third highest-grossing Spanish film of all time in the country. It also secured 10th place in the all-time Spanish box office rankings.
