AI driving game demo already puts developers in debt

Teach my little sister to drive is an upcoming DMV simulator in which players, riding passengers, ask a chaotic young student to pass his exam. Developers Easy Fox are adopting AI for the project, with the titular sister being a live chat bot that the player instructs. Beyond the simple challenge for the technology, Easy Fox notes that the simple demo of the game proves problematic, because taking into account the use of tokens forces them to go into debt.

“Over the past month, the number of demo players has increased more than twenty-fold,” reads the latest update to the Steam page. “Thank you so much for giving our game much more attention than we expected. This growth has also significantly increased our operating costs.”

As the update explains, the game initially updated players via a chatbot running on Google’s Gemini. With no financial barrier between them and the curious, players in the demo were triggering limited usability errors, with Google informing Easy Fox that there was no easy way out. Switching to the competing OpenAI model, while hoping to find a solution with Gemini, turns out to be the least of their problems.

Easy Fox claims that the influx of players forced them to take out a bank loan to keep the demo running. Maintaining the demo apparently costs them more than $1,000 per day, which they admit they have to factor into the price of the final product. While a number of game developers have turned to AI to create back-end in-game assets and code, Teach my little sister is a more unique case. By leveraging an agent for sustained real-time gameplay, the game found an expensive way to recreate what life line And Hello there, Pikachu! accomplished more than 20 years ago.

“We want to continue to run the demo and would like more people to take advantage of it,” writes Easy Fox. “However, we are a small team of four, and financial pressure may force us to close the demo early before full release. We have not made that decision at this time.” The update also addresses complaints that, even in a Calamity-based game, the AI-powered sister doesn’t follow instructions as desired.

Although only a microcosm, financial stress is a fun illustration of one of AI’s biggest white elephants. In other words, no one really knows how to make the most of it. While proliferating in short-form video content, gruesome fast food posters, and visual assets that developers are “destined to take down,” the companies themselves operate purely on investment, without generating a profit. The amount of resources required to keep these computers running continuously exceeds what audiences are willing to spend to see SpongeBob murder Shrek. Over the last year, AI companies have been forced to adapt, adding new bounties to their service, the so-called “tokenpocalypse.” As the global economy is now held hostage by industry, the burden of technology continues to put people on edge. Easy Fox quickly gets a lesson in something the world’s population will likely learn the hard way.
