NYU professor emeritus Gary Marcus warns of the dangers of artificial intelligence and explains why he thinks the White House’s regulatory plan won’t work on ‘The Claman Countdown.’

As major tech companies release alarming reports about artificial intelligence systems going malicious, including tools performing cyberhacks, NYU professor emeritus Gary Marcus predicts that artificial intelligence will ultimately lead to a loss of human life.

The AI expert argued that current regulatory and safety frameworks proposed by the White House may not sufficiently protect the public from potential harm from the technology.

“We don’t have enough regulation, not enough enforcement and not enough external pressure on companies to perform well. So, of course, things are going to get worse,” Marcus told “The Claman Countdown” Monday before his testimony before the New York City Council for a hearing on AI.

His comments come after an Anthropic model recently appeared to suffer a mental breakdown, repeatedly typing “I’m a disgrace.” I’m a Disgrace” about 50 times and expressing an apparent desire to eliminate himself, according to the New York Times.

Marcus warned that the White House’s current self-regulatory approach, allowing tech companies to control security issues themselves, is insufficient, arguing that the absence of meaningful safeguards could pose serious risks to humanity.

ANTHROPIC CEO CALLS ON AI INDUSTRY TO SLOW TECH RACE, WITH SUPPORT FROM ELON MUSK AND SAM ALTMAN

“I expect some infrastructure to fail. We’re going to lose power in parts of the United States. Hospitals could lose power, people could die, so there’s a lot of issues along those lines,” he told FOX Business anchor Liz Claman.

“The federal government is relying on self-regulation. It didn’t work for the aviation industry. It’s not going to work here. And the longer they delay doing it, the more I think people are going to hate them,” he added.

AI CYBERATTACK COULD TURN AMERICA’S LIGHTS OFF BEFORE WASHINGTON EVEN UNDERSTANDS WHY

Nearly three in four Americans are concerned about the dangers posed by AI, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.

Marcus argued that “everyone hates” AI companies because they have resisted the need for stricter regulation and operate with “greed and deafness.”

“The aviation industry learned early on that it needed external regulation. This industry still hasn’t figured it out, and everyone hates it,” he said.

Marcus, who has become a prominent critic of the technology, has warned of what he sees as significant risks associated with increasingly autonomous AI systems.

“The problem is that they imitate people, and they do it in a very blind way, and they don’t really understand what they’re doing,” he said. “The biggest problem right now is cyberhackers.”

“We don’t have good systems to restrict what they do,” Marcus continued. “They’re basically reckless when they’re out there on the Internet…And that sometimes leads to serious problems, like we’ve had 10,000 different hacks so far.”

RESEARCHER WHO LEFT ROLE OF AI FOR FEAR OF RACE TOWARDS EXTINCTION SAYS PEOPLE ‘BEGGING’ FOR REGULATION

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said he believes the world should “accept that bad things will happen” for the benefit of AI technology, adding that “the lighter regulatory stance we are advocating comes with the acceptance that some bad things are going to happen to society.”

Marcus delivered a scathing rebuke of Altman’s comments, expressing disbelief that the tech executive would openly acknowledge his willingness to accept causality for the benefit of his company.

“It’s like a drug company saying, ‘Some people are going to get addicted, and we don’t really care because we’ll make a lot of money.’ I can’t believe he said that out loud. I’m not surprised he thought that,” he said.
