AI law firm Crosby bids for famously disintegrating firm Weil Gotshal

Like a real-life episode of “Suits,” the demise of the Wall Street-famous law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges was the talk of the legal industry this week. And now Silicon Valley has entered the scene.

The two-year-old AI-focused law firm Crosby has launched a purchase offer for some of Weil Gotshal’s assets, including its brand, trademark and some unspecified internal data, TechCrunch has confirmed. In addition, he is also working on recruiting some of the firm’s 1,200 lawyers. L’Information was the first to report this offer.

The prestigious Weil Gotshal confirmed this week to the New York Times that he was preparing to vote for dissolution in the coming days. The dissolution comes after the heir apparent to the firm’s leadership turned down the job, a number of its top lawyers left the firm and a hoped-for merger with rival Willkie Farr & Gallagher was abandoned, the Times reported.

Meanwhile, Crosby’s founders believe they represent the future of law firms. Rather than selling its internally developed AI technology to existing firms like Harvey or Legora, Crosby is a real law firm. It uses its AI to provide legal services, the startup promises, at a speed never before possible.

The startup has raised approximately $85 million, including a $60 million Series B round in March led by Lux and Index, with participation from its leader Sequoia, Elad Gil, 01 Advisors and Bain Capital Ventures. Crosby emerged from stealth mode in 2025, armed with $5.8 million in startup capital.

While no one has pointed the finger at the rise of legal AI as a contributing factor to Weil Gotshal’s downfall, AI may well be the key to the future of the legal industry. Terms of the offer have not been disclosed and there is no guarantee Crosby will prevail. But if that’s the case, Weil Gotshal’s legacy could rise from the ashes, transformed by an AI-focused company.
