AI tool predicts cancer survival by analyzing a patient’s selfie
A single snapshot of a cancer patient’s face could one day help predict how long they will live. Researchers at Mass General Brigham say they have built an AI model, FAHR-FaceSurvival, that estimates mortality risk using only a photograph of the face, according to a study published in Lancet Digital Health. Among patients whose scores were in the top 10% for risk, about half died within 90 days; in the lowest 10%, about 2% did so, the Washington Post reports.
The system grew out of an earlier tool, FaceAge, which guesses a person’s “biological age”; this system collects different information about a patient’s health, depending on the Tutor. Attention maps suggest that the new AI focuses on areas under the eyes and along the nose, although scientists don’t yet know what precise signals it reads. Outside experts call the work intriguing, according to the Jobbut emphasize that it must prove that it adds information beyond what doctors can already see — and that it avoids coding for racial or other biases.
