From calm on set to order in court.
Viewers of Today’s show were left in confusion when Al Roker made a sudden departure during the September 28 broadcast, with the meteorologist Dylan Dreyer replacing him throughout the rest of the episode.
“We have Dylan replacing Al, who had to leave a little early”, presented Savannah Guthrie said during the show, with Dreyer adding, “Yeah, another little switcheroo this morning.”
And when the time came for the third hour of Todaywhich Roker co-hosts alongside Dreyer and Craig Melvinsaid Melvin at the top of the show, “Al had to be gone for just a little while. He’ll be back tomorrow.”
But even though it seemed the departure would remain shrouded in mystery, it was Roker himself who quickly pulled back the curtain on where he had gone.
“I came out of Today’s show early,” the 71-year-old said in an Instagram video, “because I have jury duty.”
And indeed, the building behind him was not Rockefeller Center, where Today movies, but rather an impressive building with columns.
But Roker couldn’t help but belie the grandeur of the moment with a well-timed pot joke.
