Alan Cumming stars in “Avengers: Doomsday,” but bluntly told SiriusXM, “To be honest, I don’t completely understand the plot.” Not that Marvel allowed the returning “X-Men” star to read the full script on the comic book mast, but even filming his scenes left Cumming with no clarity about what was happening around him. The Emmy winner said his goal in the film came down to running everywhere.
“There was a moment where we were shooting a scene, and it was one of the few scenes where I was actually on the backlot and not in front of a blue screen,” Cumming said. “And this man came up and said, ‘So right now Alan, these giant robots are blah blah,’ and started telling me the thing, and I was like, ‘You know what, thank you very much, but just tell me where I’m pointing, whatever I’m pointing at. And I’ll do that. Really, I just know I’m here to run.'”
“And I saw Florence Pugh yesterday at the Emmys,” he added. “And I said, ‘God, that’s so funny. I’ve never met you, but you laid on me, or your body did a double.’ And she said, ‘Yeah, I laid on you too, but it was your body double.’
Cumming reprises the mutant Nightcrawler in “Avengers: Doomsday” alongside returning “X-Men” stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden. He made his debut as a mutant in “X2: He previously said that advances in film makeup significantly reduced the time he spent transforming into the blue-skinned, tattooed Nightcrawler.
“It used to take about four and a half hours to apply, but now it only takes 90 minutes,” Cumming said. “Before, all the tattoos were done by hand. They didn’t decide what they wanted until filming started. Now they just stick on my face. It’s a game changer.”
