Alexander Skarsgård on his “wicker” looks on the red carpet
Alexander Skarsgård knows how to make an entrance.
The Swedish actor turned heads with his wacky look on the red carpet while promoting his new fantasy romance “Wicker.”
At the premiere in London earlier this month, he wore a metallic gold Saint Laurent suit. As if that wasn’t bold enough, he slipped on a pair of clear plastic lace-up shoes.
“They were surprisingly comfortable and I was worried they would fog up after five minutes, but that didn’t happen,” Skarsgård told me Saturday at the Academy Museum gala. “But I’ve gotten a lot of comments from friends and family about my little piglets sticking out. They’re making fun of me. They’re making fun of my feet.”
At the premiere of “Wicker” in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Skarsgård wore a multi-colored skirt and a whimsical black shirt adorned with the face of her co-star Olivia Colman from London fashion house Chopova Lowena. “We’ve been on a press tour for a few weeks, and now we’re in Los Angeles, and this is our last big premiere before the movie comes out on Friday,” he said. “I wanted to wear something special for this lovely lady here, Olivia, who I adore.”
As for the purple and green skirt, Skarsgård said: “It’s very comfortable. It’s a pretty warm night, and it’s light and breezy. I’m enjoying it.”
Earlier in the day, he shocked attendees at a SAG-AFTRA screening and Q&A session when he arrived wearing a long gray wig. “I got a little jealous because everyone compliments Olivia on her beautiful hair and her beautiful hair color,” Skarsgård said. “I don’t like my hair. As a narcissistic actor, I need a little attention, so I threw on a nice gray wig to match Olivia today.”
“Wicker” co-star Elizabeth Debicki praised Skarsgård’s fashion choices. “He can’t do anything wrong,” she said. “I love this man. What can I say? I’m biased.”
In “Wicker,” Colman plays an outcast from a medieval town who falls in love with a wicker man (Skarsgård). Debicki plays a housewife who burns with jealousy at the attention the locals give to Colman and Skarsgård’s characters.
Skarsgård’s wicker look was a practical costume created by Wētā atelier in New Zealand, with lead makeup artist Sarah Rubano, prosthetics designer Joe Dunckley and lead weaver Jasmin van Lith.
“Amazing,” Colman said of seeing Skarsgård in the suit for the first time. “We had seen footage of the Weta workshop in New Zealand for about 18 months, and all of a sudden he put it on, and we were all like, ‘Oh my God, I hope this works.’ And he came out of the makeup trailer and said, ‘Oh my God, this is beautiful.’
“Wicker” is available in limited release from October 23 before expanding on October 30.
