Fans of Sacha Baron Cohen will want to put on their wraparound sunglasses as the star’s new film, Ali G, is set to be released for streaming.

Baron Cohen makes his directorial debut with a comedy centered around the hip-hop journalist he created with the sketch comedy series. Da Ali G Showwhich debuted in the UK in 2000 and was later broadcast on HBO.

Baron Cohen took to Instagram on Monday in character to celebrate the upcoming streaming release. “There are 14,400 minutes a day, which means you’ll be able to watch it 161 times a day for the rest of your life for free,” he captioned the post in Ali G’s signature dialect.

Ali G: Who am I? focuses on main character Baron Cohen learning that his girlfriend (Morgana Robinson) is eight months pregnant, leading him to visit America to prepare for the child’s arrival. The film uses the style of comedy that the star has used in previous features like the 2006 film. Borat and its 2020 sequel, as well as that of 2009 Brunoin which unsuspecting individuals become the focus of social commentary. THE Who am I? The cinematic strategy was designed to create a special experience and add urgency to the ability to see the film on the big screen before streaming it.

In the weeks leading up to its release, Ali G: Who am I? was the subject of an AI-generated email campaign asking global cinema chains to boycott the film, although no cinema chains supported the ban. Amazon MGM did not report revenue from this weekend’s theatrical release.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood ReporterBaron Cohen responded to criticism of the character. “The main joke is that a white moron, maybe the stupidest man in the world, is interviewing a white pundit or a high-ranking politician, and this white pundit or this high-ranking politician believes that this fool that I’m playing is real, and that leads to comedy,” he explained. “And in my opinion, that slightly undermines the power of the establishment.” »

In his criticism of Ali G: Who am I?, THR Critic Frank Scheck described it as having “lots of laughs, sure, but also plenty of dead spots.”

Known for his bravado and London slang, Ali G made his big screen debut with director Mark Mylod’s 2002 feature film. Ali G. Indahouse.
