Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito withdraws from a major climate debate just a week before the court takes up the case.
Alito had received calls to recuse himself Suncor v. Boulder on his financial interests in energy companies. A Monday letter from Scott Harriscourt clerk, informed the parties that Alito “has determined that he will not continue to participate in this matter.” The notice did not further explain its decision to suspend proceedings on October 5, the first day of the court’s new term.
In this case, Colorado localities seek damages under the state’s tort laws related to the effects of climate change. The suit is named after Suncor and ExxonMobil.
