Amazon drops GrubHub and taps Uber Eats for Prime
Amazon has made Uber Eats its official restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the United States, ending the existing deal between the e-commerce giant and Grubhub.
Under the new partnership announced Thursday, Amazon Prime members will be able to order food from Uber Eats directly through Amazon.com and the Amazon Shopping app. Importantly, Prime members will not need to create an Uber account and will not pay delivery fees for orders over $25, the companies said.
Amazon’s commercial deal with Grubhub that gave Prime members access to Grubhub+ ends Thursday, according to an Amazon spokesperson, who said the company continually evaluates its third-party offerings. Amazon said it identified an opportunity to offer an even better restaurant delivery experience.
A Grubhub spokesperson also confirmed the deal was ending. Prime members can no longer place orders through Amazon.com or the shopping app. However, if Prime members have already activated Grubhub+, they will still be able to use this subscription until December 31, 2027.
The new partnership deepens an already extensive relationship between Amazon and Uber. The companies have existing agreements covering cloud computing, Zoox robotaxis and integrating Uber Eats into Amazon’s AI-powered Alexa+ assistant.
It also allows Amazon to offer its Prime members another sweetener to justify that annual fee. To help kick off the initiative, Amazon and Uber are offering Prime members $20 off their first two orders of $25 or more in the first two weeks.
Amazon’s ousting of Grubhub ends a once-close relationship. Amazon struck a deal with the company for the first time in 2022, giving Prime members a free subscription to Grubhub+.
Two years later, Amazon expanded its commerce deal and made free Grubhub+ membership an ongoing offer for Prime members. The e-commerce giant also struck a deal with Just Eat Takeaway.com, then owner of Grubhub, to increase its stake in the food delivery company up to 18%.
Under this performance-based agreement, which was to be renewed annually, Amazon could receive warrants representing an additional stake in Grubhub. But a few months later, Just Eat Takeaway announced plans to sell Grubhub to Wonder. According to Just Eat Takeway’s annual report, Amazon chose in December 2024 to cash in its current exercisable warrants.
The business partnership between Amazon and Grubhub, however, has continued until now.
