Surprise! Hot on the heels of PlayStation’s scaling technology announcements, Microsoft and AMD have just revealed that the company’s flagship technology, FSR 4.1, will be coming to the Xbox platform.

FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) is a technology from AMD that renders games at a lower resolution and then uses machine learning to generate a sharper image. Since the hardware isn’t working as hard, this overhead can be used to improve performance.

FSR 4.1 represents a big step forward from previous versions, and Microsoft has teamed up with AMD to bring it not only to the Xbox Series X, but also to the Xbox Ally very as a result, performance increases significantly.

Look on it

“At Xbox, we’re building a gaming platform designed to meet gamers where they are and make it easier for creators to reach them,” Xbox CTO Scott Van Vilet explained. “AMD has been an important partner in this journey for more than two decades. Together, our teams have advanced gaming, across Xbox and Windows. From the silicon at the heart of our consoles and handhelds, to technologies like DirectX, Advanced Shader Delivery, and AutoSR that help developers get the most out of hardware and deliver better experiences for our players.”

“Today, we’re excited to take another step forward together. With the arrival of FSR 4.1 on Xbox. Now, we’ve worked very closely with AMD to optimize this technology, giving developers another powerful tool that delivers exceptional performance and visual quality for gamers. Now, whether you’re playing on an Xbox Ally handheld, or soon on Xbox Series software, and there’s even more to do with the Helix project, leveraging FSR Diamond to power the sequel.”

It’s not clear exactly When These technologies will be deployed on Xbox devices. It looks like FSR 4.1 will be coming to Xbox Ally

Unfortunately, it appears that the base model Xbox Ally is completely incompatible with FSR 4.1, which is a bit of a shame, but it should prove transformative for those who own the Xbox Ally X and the just-released Xbox Ally X20, as well as the Xbox Series S.

The Xbox Series S has always been difficult for developers due to its inconsistent RAM allocation, but if FSR 4.1 can do some of the heavy lifting, it should ease the pressure on developers to deliver a native 1080p image.

We are contacting Microsoft for clarification on timelines and will respond if we hear back.
