AMD launches Helion rack server for agentic AI
AMD (AMD) is diving further into the agentic AI race with its new AMD Helion data center rack server.
Unveiled Monday at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose, California, Helion is designed to be equipped with various CPU and GPU configurations depending on customer needs.
The Helion is intended to serve as a reference design for AMD partners and customers, providing instructions for building the platforms.
The company said the server can be fully equipped with its sixth-generation EPYC processors to handle agentic AI tasks and servers, or configured with a set of processors and its Instinct MI350P GPUs, which would serve as a general-purpose AI platform.
“Agentic AI is not a single workload. Enterprise applications need agents to execute code and coordinate complex workflows,” Dan McNamara, senior vice president and general manager of enterprise computing and AI at AMD, said in a statement.
“Achieving this requires optimized compute and infrastructure that can adapt to different workloads. With AMD Helion, we combine AMD EPYC performance, open software and flexible rack designs so our partners can build systems tailored to customer needs and efficiently use available power,” he added.

AMD NVDA
The move allows AMD to better compete with rival Nvidia (NVDA), which offers its own rack server reference designs, including its NVL72 servers.
AMD, like the rest of the chip industry, continues to benefit from the AI boom. The company beat analysts’ estimates for top and bottom lines in its last earnings report and provided a better-than-expected outlook for the current quarter.
Earnings per share rose 245%, while revenue soared 50% to $11.5 billion.
Nvidia, however, continues to dominate in terms of sales, bringing in $96.2 billion in the previous quarter.
AMD stock, however, has outperformed Nvidia over the past year, climbing about 182% year to date. Nvidia stock is up 25% during the same period.
