Before all this, she gave a concert in Amsterdam on February 8, 2007, presented in full on the third disc of the CD. Winehouse had a good voice and good spirit, backed by the band that usually played her European shows at the time, led by bassist Dale Davis (i.e. not the Dap-Kings). This is a fairly simple overview of Back to blackwith some Franc gems and a cover of “Valerie” by the Zutons, a future Winehouse signature, added. Although the band is loose and prone to vamping, particularly on the reggae-embraced “Just Friends,” these live renditions are faithful to the recordings. Winehouse continued to bend and stretch in her songs as she performed them over the years – she had a limited list of tracks from which she could draw, especially since most people showed up to hear. Back to black. She eventually grew tired of his songs, according to her father Mitch Winehouse’s memoir. She would sometimes remove the most desperate Fielder-related songs from her setlist – “Wake Up Alone,” “Some Unholy War” and “Back to Black” – because they were too difficult to sing. “To sing it well, I have to think about how I felt at that moment,” she said. “At the end I’m still half in tears…personal songs, right?”

The Amsterdam show has already been partly broadcast in a special Dutch edition of Back to black and, in addition to “Addicted,” it is available online as a soundboard-quality bootleg. It’s nice that this recording, some B-sides and the new demos are now streamable and available in one place on physical media (although the vinyl edition is slightly truncated). But this 20th anniversary package is rather sparse in its brand-new offerings — just five previously unreleased tracks and many old covers already available, like Winehouse’s rocksteady version of Sam Cooke’s “Cupid.” Winehouse claimed she had “a lot” of leftover material from the Black sessions, and, at the time of the release of the posthumous compilation Lioness: Hidden treasures, Salaam Remi revealed “a lot of things that she wrote and submitted that have not been published.” The demos she worked on for the project Back to black the follow-up, however, was destroyed, according to former Universal Music UK executive David Joseph, who said Billboard“Taking a rod or a vote is not something that could happen on my watch. It can’t happen on anyone else’s anymore.” This is great, but it also reminds us that a void can never be filled. Maybe Back to black It’s wise not to even try the 20th anniversary edition.
