An Official Update on Whether ‘Lanterns’ Season 2 Will Bring Back Hal Jordan
Fans are dying to know if Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, a DCU fan favorite, will be brought back in Lanterns season 2. We now have an update.
HBO Max
on Sunday Lanterns The season finale sharply divided audiences, based on what you expected from the finale, or how familiar you were with the characters and comedic lore and how the show might deviate from it.
But there is one thing that has been made clear. Hal Jordan, the real Hal Jordan, is actually dead, impulsively shot like Kerry when it was revealed that he knew his son Noah was a manhunter. No gimmicks, but not a complete lack of hope either.
In a new interview with Collider, initially Lanterns co-creator and writer Damon Lindelof talked about Hal’s return in season 2, where, despite being coy, he almost confirms it.
“I can only tell you that everyone in the room from Season 1, including the writers who are working on the ideation of Season 2, felt like, even though we knew it was going to be emotionally devastating and/or disappointing and maybe even frustrating, the worst thing we could do is show you a pilot in which Hal Jordan was definitely dead, and then try to go back and say, ‘Oh, he was a clone,’ or ‘He’s just a clone “.mostly dead” in Princess Bride vernacular. As for the progress of subsequent seasons of the series, I swear to you, as I look you in the eye on Wednesday, September 30, I know nothing about creation, and in no way would I want to paralyze these writers as to what future storytelling mechanics they might indulge in. Knowing what the comics did with Parallax – and Hal, I think, died at least 3 or 4 times. over the course of the comics and celebrating everything Kyle did in his performance to make the audience fall in love with Hal.
THE Lanterns The finale rejected these clone theories, or the idea that Noah might be able to bring him back to life with his manhunter technology. No, Hal is really dead. The emphasis on that Hal.
The hope here is based on an extremely obvious tease from Sinestro where he tells the Halogram, “But there is a way. If we have your ring, I could bring you back to life for real.”
Although it’s not expanded upon at all, John actually took Hal’s ring and loaded it into Sinestro’s lantern, so that possibility remains open. Open and likely to happen, of course. Although Lindelof is not involved in Season 2, he cites the fact that Hal has been killed and resurrected several times in the comics, most famously a storyline in which Hal was infected by Parallax to become a villain, then died and returned as a hero.
As far as I know, there is no comic-based tradition of a Lantern being brought back with his ring. Lanterns spent half the season having John carry around a carbon copy of Hal, who wasn’t even a hologram and could physically touch things. Of course, if Sinestro wants to do this, you can guess that his motives are far from pure. After all, we might get a version of Parallax.
This all happens when Season 2 of Lanterns hasn’t even been greenlit or announced yet, but no one is really bothering to pretend it’s not happening. There may be some sort of hiccup with the Paramount merger, but James Gunn has already said that David Ellison told them to “keep doing what they’re doing” when it comes to the DCU, and Lanterns performed extremely well on HBO Max.
There are a lot more questions than Hal’s return, namely what happens when you load a Green Lantern ring into a lantern infected with yellow fear fissures, but there’s plenty of time to figure that out. But Hal? Hal will come back, even if no one dares to say it openly yet.
