What are you supposed to do when your former boss publishes a memoir in which he claims he never wanted to hire you because of vague concerns about your “personal life”? Well, if you’re Anna Faris, you answer it with a simple “Yeah.”
On Tuesday, prolific sitcom creator Chuck Lorre released his memoir, creatively titled Situation comedy. In it, Lorre talks about putting together the cast of Momwhich ran from 2013 to 2021. Faris starred as a single mother and recovering drug addict who forms a new relationship with her own mother (Allison Janney) as they both try to stay sober. According to “Page Six,” writes Lorre in Situation comedy that he “wasn’t sure Anna would be suitable for this kind of material”, despite the fact that she was CBS’s first choice. He eventually came to the conclusion that “someone’s personal life is none of my business” and hired Faris.
“As the years passed, it became clear that my initial reluctance to hire Anna was in fact correct,” Lorre wrote. “After six years, she left the show for mysterious reasons that weren’t mysterious to anyone on the show.” Lorre didn’t elaborate on what those reasons might have been, but went on to say that the show “found its true voice” in its final season, the only one without Faris.
On Thursday, Faris responded to Lorre’s comments in an Instagram post, saying she “didn’t really see that coming” and “of course it hurt.”
“Chuck gave me a job that I loved and for seven years I never took a day for granted,” Faris wrote. “I am proud of what we have achieved together, and nothing changes my gratitude to these people and these years.”
Faris also shared that she has been sober for a year and a half, acknowledging that she was “on a show about recovery and then I lived it.” The actress said she was now “happier than I’ve been in a long time.”
“If anyone reading this is where I was, I hope this is helpful,” she wrote. “It gets better. I’m proof.”
Kudos to Faris for her sobriety and ability to respond to all of this with grace. May we all benefit from his composure in case a former employer leaks our years-old affairs.
