Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson ‘gnaw’ wood for ‘Verity’ sex scene
- Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson share how they brought the Truth The bed frame bites bring the film to life.
- Josh Hartnett tells Weekly Entertainment that he was able to “go home” while they were “gnawing” on wood.
- “It’s so weird,” says director Michael Showalter.
Sorry, Truth fans, bringing the iconic biting scene to life wasn’t sexy for Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson.
Josh Hartnett tells Weekly Entertainment that he was “able to go home” while his teammates took “a while” to get the bed frame bite marks – which occurred during some pretty steamy sex scenes – just right.
“It was just Annie and I, on different days, gnawing on wood,” Johnson recalled. Hartnett would come on set the next day and look at “the range of different rodents.”
The first bite marks in Colleen Hoover’s book and the film adaptation, which hit theaters Friday, were made by Verity (Hathaway) during oral sex with her husband, Jeremy (Hartnett). When Lowen (Johnson) moves into their house and takes over the job of the incapacitated Verity, she develops a romantic relationship with Verity. In order to assert his rights, Lowen makes his own bite marks on the headboard.

According to Hathaway, it was actually quite technical to bring this “very, very” important detail to life.
“We didn’t leave it to chance,” Hathaway says, explaining that she and director Michael Showalter had “many meetings” about the bites. He also “showed me a lot of bites,” she recalled.
“We had to figure out what shade of wood. It had to be something that could be a real bed, but also be soft enough to bite into,” adds Hathaway. “When you read it, you read so fast you’re like, ‘Oh my God, this is amazing.’ But then when it comes time to play, you’re like, “Are you going to bite off a wooden headboard?” You really had to understand it.
Honestly, Johnson’s biggest concern was “how to make it sexy and not lose teeth.” Showalter notes that they used “softwood” for this purpose. ” Hathaway says, “We had to introduce some sensuality. ”
Author Hoover also delves into the bite marks of it all, explaining how something she wrote in passing became one of the book’s most memorable moments. (Movie theaters also sell Truth memorabilia that features bite marks to celebrate the release of the film.)

“When I wrote this, I didn’t think it would become a thing,” the author reveals. “It was just a line. The fact that it made it into the movie and then onto the (wine) glass. It’s so funny.”
Showalter adds: “It’s so perverse.”
Truth is out now.
