Anthony Edwards needs knee surgery and could miss two months
Timber wolves star guard Anthony Edwards will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and miss up to two months, ESPN’s Shams Charania tweets.
As Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated (Twitter link) points out, opening week was brutal. Jalen Williams, Paolo Banchero, Kawhi Leonard, Jaren Jackson Jr., Cason Wallace And Jalen Suggs have all been sidelined due to serious injuries and Edwards now joins that group.
Edwards is dealing with knee soreness and the club has decided to resolve the issue as soon as possible in hopes that he will be back in December and fully ready to go, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic tweeted. Despite the illness, Edwards is off to a spectacular start, averaging 33.3 points, including a 47-point outburst in an overtime loss to Cleveland on Monday.
Krawczynski noted in an article published before the surgery was revealed that while his shots were falling, Edwards lacked the usual burst and sometimes walked with a limp. He was only cleared to play against the Cavs after pregame warmups and had been listed as questionable to play Wednesday against Golden State. Edwards suffered a hyperextended left knee in the playoffs last season and was also hampered by inflammation in his right knee, Krawcyznski added.
In his first five NBA seasons, Edwards never appeared in fewer than 72 games. He appeared in 79 games for three straight seasons until last season, where he was limited to 61 games, primarily due to a foot injury.
With Edwards sidelined, new backcourt partner Ball LaMelo will undoubtedly try to catch up further. Ayo Dosunmu, Terrence Shannon Jr. And Isaiah Evans will see their playing time increase as Minnesota tries to survive without its franchise player.
