Anthony Edwards to undergo surgery for knee injury, latest rumors on Wolves star’s return timetable
Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards will be out “up to two months” after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday.
Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic provided more details and reported that surgery would take place Thursday for the setback that is expected to sideline the four-time All-Star for “more than two months.”
Edwards was previously listed as questionable due to dealing with a right knee injury ahead of a Wednesday night game against the Golden State Warriors.
The news comes a day after Wolves head coach Chris Finch told reporters he believed Edwards’ injury was a “day-to-day situation” that warranted “no long-term concerns,” according to Krawczynski.
Edwards had issues with both knees last season, including a hyperextended left knee and bone bruises during the Wolves’ playoff run last April.
He previously missed time after an MRI revealed inflammation in his right knee in March.
Edwards experienced knee soreness starting in March and continuing through the playoffs, according to Krawczynski.
He later said he took two months off from basketball this offseason to allow his knees to heal, according to Krawczynski.
Edwards could be seen grabbing his right knee during a game against the Toronto Raptors this past Sunday. He still averaged 48.1% shooting in 33.8 minutes per night during the Wolves’ 3-1 start to the season.
The Wolves star also led the NBA with 12.5 field goals per game while averaging 33.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and two steals.
Edwards recently played more than 41 minutes and gave up 47 points in a Monday night overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A two-month recovery period would likely sideline Edwards for about 25 games and put him on track to return in late December.
Whether Jaden McDaniels and LaMelo Ball can step up their offensive contributions during this span will determine whether the Wolves are still on track for another playoff run by the time Edwards potentially returns to the field this winter.
