Anthropic quietly pitches its own AI security bill to lawmakers
Representatives of artificial intelligence giant Anthropic have quietly introduced a bill to lawmakers on Capitol Hill to regulate AI safety and security at the border, according to three people with knowledge of the effort who were granted anonymity to discuss private deliberations.
THE confidential draftobtained by POLITICO and not previously reported, marks a notable effort by the frontier AI lab to shape the rules governing its own technology as Congress considers how to respond to a rapidly changing industry.
“This bill represents the proposals set out in Anthropic Advanced AI Frameworkwhich we have been advocating to federal and state lawmakers since June,” an Anthropic spokesperson said. “These are common-sense policies that we believe Congress should act on.”
The bill would allow the government to block the release or use of a model only if it poses a foreseeable and imminent risk of more than $1 billion in harm, or killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people. The risk must come from the creation or release of a biological weapon, from the model beyond the control of its developer or from a cyberattack. Language mirrors that of California’s AI laws including SB 53which was enacted last year.
