Saturday Night Live weighed in on the AI industry’s recent warnings of doom last night, as actress Jane Wickline gave her impression of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
Weekend Update host Michael Che — who seemed a little unsure about how to pronounce Amodei’s last name — kicked off the segment by describing the CEO as having “stumbled during a press tour” during which he apparently agreed with a former employee’s assertion that artificial intelligence could destroy humanity.
Wickline’s version of Amodei sported an impressive wig and delivered hesitant responses that sometimes devolved into full Gollum-style exchanges with their dark side, at one point confessing, “AI is the devil and I its creator.” »
Wickline-as-Amodei assured the public that AI leaders “are all on the same page here: We don’t tolerate what we’re doing.”
“AI is not a weapon, it’s a tool: a tool for making weapons,” she said. “And I urge you to ask me to stop.”
As for the technology’s supposed benefits, such as potentially curing cancer, the fictional Amodei said, “Put another way: In 10 years, there’s about a 10 percent chance that cancer won’t be a problem for anyone.” »
