Apple and T-Mobile monitoring lets you finance iPhone 18 Pro or Duo with a prepaid plan
The fault

Do not select AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon as your financing option. | Apple Picture
Even if AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon has the best deals on smartphones, you don’t need to have a qualifying plan to finance an iPhone. You can also use Apple Card monthly payments to spread the cost of ownership over 24 months or rent an iPhone for 12 or 24 months through Apple Upgrade. The frustrating thing is that both of these options require you to be a AT&T, T-MobileOr Verizon customer. However, it seems Apple has been a little lax when it comes to implementation. It turns out that if you select T-Mobile as a carrier, a new iPhone will ship unlocked. When configuring the device, you will be able to bypass T-Mobile activation by ignoring the “Transfer your iPhone number” prompt and tapping “Continue” three times. Tap “Not Now” and voilà, you will be free to connect your new iPhone to any prepaid carrier of your choice.
What is happening?
Apparently when you finance a phone via Apple Card monthly installments or lease it with Apple Upgrade and select T-Mobile As an operator, you are not required to verify your account immediately. Just make sure you don’t choose T-Mobile as a financing option.
It looks like T-Mobile The activation process when you turn on a new iPhone is just a setup feature designed by Apple and not a sign that the device is locked to T-Mobile.
In addition to paying Apple hundreds of millions of dollars for preferential treatment, AT&T, T-MobileAnd Verizon also checks postpaid customers. While AT&T And Verizon have strict rules, T-MobileThe verification process does not require you to prove that you are a customer.
the new 18 Pro on ACMI just arrived – can confirm option 1 works. when prompted for carrier account number and so on, simply leave it blank, press “Continue” three times and then “Try Again” to reveal the “Not Now” button and bypass immediate activation like previous years. The eSIM transfer from one phone to another went smoothly and we are up and running!

Legality
Whistle don’t think bypassing the Big Three using this loophole is a mistake. The publication claims that it is Apple and T-Mobile who entered into the agreement on carrier requirements, not you. Financing a phone directly through Apple is not illegal, as you will enter into a financing agreement with Goldman Sachs or Klarna. You’ll still pay the installments, but not to the Big Three.
Will probably be closed soon
Apple and major carriers have already filled the gap for standard models like the iPhone 17, 17th and iPhone 16, so it’s only a matter of time before it turns off for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo as well. Keep in mind that you’ll pay more each month if you opt for Apple Card monthly payments instead of financing a new iPhone through one of the big three. This will likely be offset by savings from using a prepaid carrier.
In the end, that’s not how you are supposed to finance a phone, and no one knows what punitive measures Apple might take if it found out.
