The next wave of Mac releases will be centered around the Apple Silicon M6 chipset. Apple launched it in the M6-equipped Mac Mini, which was announced on August 25, 2026 and went on sale on September 22, 2026. The MacBook Pro family is next. Apple’s MacBook portfolio, while not as regular as the iPhone, still offers a guide to upcoming launches and release dates.
MacBook Pro M6: Apple’s progressive silicon architecture
Apple plans to anchor its laptop lineup in the fourth quarter with the entry-level MacBook Pro running standard M6 silicon.
It’s not always annual and the dates change in a wide four-week window in October and November, but the MacBook is expected to land in late October. Apple is expected to take a similar development path with the M6 family, building the base models with the vanilla M6 before moving on to the M6 Pro and M6 Max variants. This indicates that the MacBook Pro M6 is one of the first macOS laptops of this generation.
On Bloomberg’s Power On podcast, Apple reporter Mark Gurman chose this model and the late October timeline as Apple’s next launch. Whether this is a press release launch (like the Mac Mini M6 was) or an in-person event remains to be seen.
MacBook Pro OLED: display transition and clash between iPhone Duo
A delayed 2027 arrival for the OLED MacBook Pro avoids compressing retail visibility during the high-margin iPhone Duo release window.
It also remains to be seen whether Apple takes this opportunity to unveil the MacBook Pro OLED model. The advanced display is expected to not only offer deeper blacks and more vibrant colors, but also be the first Mac with a touchscreen. Both features are easy to find on Windows and Linux laptops, but Tim Cook’s Apple has firmly refused this upgrade.
Adding a touchscreen to macOS presents several challenges, including the balance between redesigning an app’s interface for touch and accessibility for the vast majority of Macs without a touchscreen, and positioning the OLED MacBook Pro as a professional MacBook.
The price will not be enough. These grades of MacBook usually come with the M Pro or M Max chipsets, and the M6 family isn’t ready to offer that. Expect the first OLED MacBook Pro to feature the M5 Pro and M5 Max chipsets. This should be enough to defeat the vanilla MacBook Pro M6.
A late October reveal is an option, but it would hurt the marketing and visibility of the M6 MacBook Pro and, more importantly, the iPhone Duo, which is expected to go on sale in the final weeks of October. Holding on to the OLED MacBook Pro until early 2027 gives the entire portfolio time to breathe.
MacBook Air M6 and MacBook Neo 2: entry-level silicon segmentation
Apple will maintain a split lineup of entry-level laptops through spring 2027 by dividing consumer demand between.
The MacBook Air will be the other MacBook to feature a vanilla M6. Apple has opted for a spring launch for the user-friendly laptop, and there’s nothing to suggest the M6 will change that model. Once again, there is no set timetable for the 13-inch or 15-inch MacBook Air update, but a late March/early April window is expected.
What you might not see is a business-oriented MacBook Pro M6 Pro or M6 Max. Apple is reportedly considering discontinuing these models and moving straight to the M7 family. If that’s the case, you may not see these laptops until late 2027, or even spring 2028. The focus will likely remain on the OLED MacBook Pro as the flagship macOS laptop until 2027.
If any MacBook should come close to the iPhone’s fixed schedule, it’s the MacBook Neo. After all, its main advantage is that the laptop is not built around the Mxx-class chipsets, but the Axx Pro chipsets used in the Pro iPhones, especially the chipsets bundled with an inoperative GPU core. Production follows a fixed schedule, so MacBook Neo updates will follow a similar schedule.
The MacBook Neo was launched on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Given that the MacBook Neo looks more like a phone than a laptop, would Apple see it on the nose six months after the iPhone launch? If so, that would indicate Wednesday, March 10, 2027. And if this date holds true, could it be the same as the launch of the iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2?
John Ternus’ MacBook Pro Operational Roadmap: Surpassing Launch Windows
CEO John Ternus has an operational mandate to dismantle Apple’s rigid seasonal release schedule in favor of continuous hardware introductions..
One factor to consider is Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus. The Mac platform’s almost regular but always random release dates fall under its control for the first time. The current generation of the M6 is already in production, but Ternus said its approach will be more hardware releases throughout the year, moving away from spring and fall product launch events.
The predictability of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro could still change.
