Apple responds to reports of iPhone Duo screen hacking

Shortly after the iPhone Duo launched, a few users reported hinge issues causing cracks on the internal screen. Apple has now responded to the reports in a statement to MacRumorsstating that a small number of units are affected.

The response to iPhone Duo from early adopters has been incredibly positive, and we’re seeing exciting things from developers who are quickly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue affecting the internal display of a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience any issues with their iPhone Duo screen, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apple did not say what caused the crack or whether a fix was planned. Affected users were able to obtain replacements in store, but with limited stock available, some must wait.

According to Apple, the problem is limited in scope. Most users won’t see a problem with their ‌iPhone Duo‌ screen, and it’s not a flaw that people need to worry about over time. On affected units, the crack appears to appear shortly after purchase.

We understand that some images of suspected cracks are generated by AI, making it more difficult to determine the true extent of the problem.

Many iPhone Duos experiencing issues have cracked in the same place, on the bottom half of the internal screen. The crack is along the hinge and users say there is a stuck feeling and sometimes a popping sound just before the damage appears.

iFixit took apart the ‌iPhone Duo‌ and found several possible causes for the hinge failure. The site states that several components converge at this location and that it is possible that a central support bar in the hinge that is supposed to retract may not do so, resulting in damage.
