Apple says iPhone Duo features ‘replaceable’ foldable screen layer to minimize creases

Foldable screens tend to show more noticeable creasing over time, but Apple’s Kate Bergeron says the iPhone Duo has a replaceable cover layer on its foldable screen to help alleviate this problem.
iPhone Duo’s “cover layer” on the foldable display can be replaced over time for a day-one look

After the iPhone Duo launched last month, Apple executives gave interviews explaining how the company was very intentional about maximizing durability and minimizing the crease issues that plague other foldables.
As part of this effort, it appears that the iPhone Duo has a unique design feature to ensure a “first day” experience for years to come: a replaceable cover layer on foldable display.
Here’s Kate Bergeron, Apple’s VP of Hardware Engineering, speaking to @angietutorials on TikTok:
“The matte coating on the screen does a really good job, I will say, of minimizing the crease. But there’s a cover layer on top, and we’ve done a lot of engineering work to help that wear for as long as possible, and to make sure that you get the most performance out of that layer. It’s actually replaceable, which is a really good thing for the customer, that you can remove that layer and get a new one.”

Apple refers to this “coverage layer” in its list of AppleCare estimated service costs for the iPhone Duo. As spotted by Quinn Nelson, replacing a layer of coverage costs $19 with AppleCare. Its cost without coverage is currently unknown.
So if you’re worried about spending more than $2,000 on an iPhone Duo and finding that the screen crease becomes more prominent over time, it looks like Apple has a solution.
