Are these Arizona groups registering non-citizens to vote? The federal government is investigating
PHOENIX (AZFamille) — Federal officials are looking into reports that three Arizona nonprofit groups are registering noncitizens to vote ahead of next week’s midterm elections.
The United States Attorney for the District of Arizona, Timothy Courchaine, announced Friday that his office has opened an investigation into three Arizona organizations accused of registering non-citizens:
- Stand Indivisible Arizona
- Worker power
- When we count
A press release from Courchaine’s office indicates that the matter has been handed over to the FBI for further investigation.
The prosecutor’s office also sent letters to the Maricopa County Registrar and the Arizona Secretary of State’s offices, encouraging them to review the three nonprofits’ voter registration practices.
“Based on written and video reports, staff acting on behalf of the following organizations either intentionally ignored or recklessly disregarded Arizona law prohibiting non-citizen voter registration,” the letters state.
Courchaine’s office said voting in next Tuesday’s midterm elections is strictly limited to registered citizens and non-citizens cannot vote. The statement added that knowingly registering non-citizens to vote would be a violation of federal law.
About the accused nonprofits
Stand Indivisible Arizona identifies itself as a nonpartisan, nonprofit community organization based in Scottsdale. It is run by volunteers and focused on activism.
Worker Power identifies as a multiracial, multigenerational welfare organization dedicated to preserving democracy and improving the lives of working families.
When We Count is the only one of the three to align with a party. The Democratic group says it is “focused on cutting costs, improving health care, creating jobs, ending corruption and protecting our democracy.”
