Baker Mayfield injury, latest news on QB status and return timetable after outing against Vikings

Baker Mayfield suffered a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand after throwing an interception in the fourth quarter during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 20-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Todd Bowles told reporters.

He was not on the field for the team’s final possession, replaced by Jalon Daniels.

It was a tough day for Mayfield.

The 31-year-old finished 17 of 34 for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Brian Flores’ high-pressure defense sacked him six times.

It’s been a tough season for the Buccaneers.

The team is now 0-3 after also losing to the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. Mayfield has already been sacked 13 times this season – a pace of 73 sacks in a 17-game season – and could be sidelined after Sunday’s injury.

The schedule won’t be a cakewalk either, with matchups against the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears before a Week 10 bye. Without Mayfield, it would be an even tougher time.
