Ben Affleck says ‘Justice League’ was a ‘low point’ in his career
Ben Affleck recognizes the ‘low point’ of his career, identifying it with the time he was filming Justice League.
In a new interview, the actor talked about reshoots and how Warner Bros. handled the whole situation.
“The truth is that the experience of Justice League was so, so negative for many different reasons,” Affleck said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “Some of it has to do with where I was personally, some of it has to do with the tragedy that happened at the time, and also the fact that I really understood how not to make a movie like that when the studio is at odds with the filmmaker. You’re really making a mistake. That’s what really doomed this.”
After Batman v Superman disappointed at the box office, the studio felt under pressure to make Zack Snyder’s Justice League lighter and more attractive to the public. During post-production, Snyder experienced a family tragedy and Warner Bros. hired Joss Whedon to oversee reshoots, which drastically changed the film’s storyline and tone.
“Boy, that was shit,” he said. “It was taken out of that movie and the reshoots that we did – if you want the lowest point of my career, that was it.”
Affleck noted that “the death of someone by suicide, that overshadows everything. And the way that it was, I thought, frankly, used as an excuse…I just thought it was one of the shittiest things I’d ever seen. It was so disgusting. And then the whole environment and the vibe, which I wasn’t aware of, but had sort of heard about secondhand in terms of Ray (Fisher) and Gal’s experiences (Gadot) and other people were like, “Wow, this is about as disgusting as it gets.”
