Ben Johnson’s decision to start Case Keenum was a reaction to the media
Bears coach Ben Johnson can’t help himself. And I love it.
After not naming a starting quarterback for Week 4 against the Jets – and given that many reports indicated that Tyson Bagent was going to start – Johnson decided to have Bagent and Case Keenum on the field for the first play from scrimmage.
This meant that Keenum was technically the starter, even though it was a Bagent game.
“GOOD, I have all these memos “It was like a ceremonial first pitch, passing the torch.”
Johnson was reminded that this decision gave Keenum the victory.
“Good for him,” Johnson said. “I think the team gets credit for the win.”
He’s right. It all depends on the team. The decision to play games with the starting lineup in response to his failure to keep the identity of the starter a secret has nothing to do with the team’s goals.
Once again, I like sass. It’s part of who he is. As long as it never stops you from winning a game, you’re fine.
As for whether Keenum won, it’s possible that Bagent did as well. Even though Bagent lined up at receiver, the official playbook shows two starting quarterbacks for the Bears.
