Bexar County election officials are responding to complaints from voters who say touchscreen voting machines changed their selections during early voting.
In a statement released Friday, Bexar County Elections Administrator Michele Carew said her office is monitoring concerns and communicating with the voting machine manufacturer to determine if action is needed.
“This issue is something we are monitoring closely,” Carew said. “We ask voters to confirm their choices before moving to the next screen.”
The county said reports of incorrect selections are usually related to touch screen sensitivity rather than equipment malfunctions. Officials recommend voters press firmly when making their choice.
Voters are encouraged to review their choices on the touch screen and check their printed ballots before voting.
“If a printed ballot appears not to match a voter’s desired choices, the voter should notify an election official immediately,” Carew said.
Once the vote is made, voters cannot change their choices.
The complaints follow separate voting discrepancies reported earlier this week in the East Central and Edgewood independent school districts.
Some East Central ISD voters reported a missing precinct proposal. County officials attributed the problem to incorrect information about the district received from the state and said it was corrected Monday.
The Elections Department said its machines are not connected to the Internet and are subject to accuracy testing and post-election audits. Carew said she wanted to reassure voters that the election system is secure and encouraged anyone with questions to contact the department.
