Nearly 6 million coffee makers are being recalled because their glass could break during use, increasing the risk of burns, according to an advisory from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall affects 5.9 million Bodum French Presses equipped with replaceable 8- and 12-cup glass carafes. The carafe may break unexpectedly during use if the glass is damaged or cracked, including if a metal spoon is used to stir the coffee, the advisory states.
The CPSC said the Bodum name appears on the frame and interior lid of most models and is engraved on glass carafes.

Bodum USA, which issued the recall on Oct. 29, received 70 reports of carafes broken during use, 48 of which included reports of consumer burns.
“While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the United States for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press coffee makers,” Bodum said in a statement.

The CPSC said consumers should immediately stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe and contact Bodum for a plastic mixing spoon and warning label.

The products were sold in Target, Walmart, and coffee and home goods stores nationwide, as well as on Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, and other online retailers from 1974 to October 2026 for approximately $15 to $65.
