Bra’d City: Why Rihanna, Tyla and More Celebs Are Making Bras the Main Event

The peek-a-boo bra trend is one thing, but a bra as a shirt? It may be more high fashion than it seems.

In recent months, celebrities have treated the bra less like something meant to show off under a look and more like the look itself — although many are still getting in on the exposed bra trend. It seems that Fashion Month has only offered more opportunities to try out the daring style, with bras appearing on red carpets, front rows and on Spring 2027 runways in place of shirts.

Rihanna offered the latest example on Monday, arriving at the Matières Fécales spring 2027 show on the opening day of Paris Fashion Week in a highly textured tan skirt suit. Rather than wearing much underneath, she wore the two-piece over a sheer black bra, completing the look with curved heel Christian Louboutin pumps.

This wasn’t even Rihanna’s first visible bra moment in Paris this month. A few days earlier, she wore a sheer black Ferragamo georgette blouse over a black bra with a voluminous pleated brown skirt from Maximilian Davis’ fall 2026 collection.

Tyla took the trend to a more literal point during the MTV VMAs on Sunday. The “Water” singer wore a blue snakeskin-effect bra with an extremely low-cut pencil skirt, matching pumps and choker from Mowalola’s Spring 2027 collection. Unlike a sheer dress or exposed lingerie layered under another item of clothing, there was little ambiguity as to what served as Tyla’s top.

She was hardly alone at the VMAs. Charli XCX wore an abbreviated Saint Laurent top with a sheer panel, a design loosely based on the French luxury house’s fall 2017 ready-to-wear collection, according to her stylist, Chris Horan.

JoJo Levesque — more commonly known as JoJo — “KPop Demon Hunters” star Rei Ami and “Summer House” star Ciara Miller also all arrived in variations of the bra formula.

Hannah Einbinder came up with the idea for the bra early on, just as the New York Fashion Week Spring 2027 presentations were wrapping up.

For the Emmy Awards on September 14, the “Hacks” star wore a black satin headband from the Calvin Klein collection with white trim and a long black column skirt from the spring 2027 collection designed by Veronica Leoni. Einbinder and stylist Karla Welch had seen the show during New York Fashion Week a few days earlier; the runway look was then brought back to Los Angeles in time for the ceremony.

This bra and skirt pairing has since become one of the spring season’s most enduring silhouettes, and the lingerie-style tops have been making their way onto various runways during fashion month.

At Prada in Milan, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons built the entire spring 2027 collection around skirts, then paired many of them with bras ranging from lace-trimmed balconettes to streamlined bralettes. The opening look offered the formula almost immediately: skirt, bra, no conventional shirt required.

Fendi followed with satin and lace bralettes, while Etro put small bra tops under skirt suits. Variants also appeared at Diesel and MM6 Maison Margiela.

Jennifer Lopez had anticipated the Milan fixation before the start of the shows. Arriving in the city on September 21, Lopez stayed a little more in office siren territory, wearing an open white shirt over a plunging black bralette with high-waisted black pants and platform shoes. Prada debuted its first bra and skirt look on the runway the next day.

And even though the timing centers around Fashion Month, the bra had already spent much of the summer making its way under clothes.

In July, Anya Taylor-Joy promoted “Lucky” in New York wearing the first look from Antonin Tron’s Balmain pre-spring 2027 collection: a textured fuchsia satin bra, a small olive cardigan left open at the front, and an orange and yellow jacquard pencil skirt.

There have been plenty of other moments where the bra was a shirt, from Kristen Stewart wearing a black triangle bra under a Chanel suit to Kaia Gerber pairing a Gucci bralette with a sheer skirt.

What’s changed over the course of fashion month is how often — and how little effort anyone seems to want to put into disguising underwear as something else.

A corset can become a top. A bustier has long done the same thing. There’s a good chance the bra will return to its underwear origins as the winter months get colder, but come spring 2027, if you’re feeling bold, it might be time to try out the bra-only style trend.
