Brandon Aiyuk owed 49ers $13 million in cash bonus – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

There is nothing easy and simple for the 49ers regarding the Brandon Aiyuk situation.

And it might not be as simple as Aiyuk reporting to Santa Clara to be reinstated from the NFL’s reserve/left roster, which would all but force the 49ers to release the wide receiver.

Aiyuk owes the 49ers a lot of money, as NBC Sports Bay Area suggested in June. As part of the four-year, $120 million contract extension he signed in 2024, Aiyuk received a $23 million signing bonus. Due to his non-compliance with the terms of the contract, the 49ers have the right to request reimbursement of a percentage of the signing bonus.

Aiyuk owes the 49ers about $13 million in bonus forfeiture, Tom Pelissero of The Ringer reported Thursday.

This issue could complicate Aiyuk’s attempt to force the 49ers to release him, according to the report.

The NFL Management Council and the NFL Players Association are working to find a solution to the dispute, Pelissero reported. The parties could reach an agreement or it could result in arbitration, according to the report.

It is unclear when the situation might be resolved.

Aiyuk’s new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN via text message that Aiyuk will report to the 49ers facility at Levi’s Stadium on Friday at 3 p.m.

But, as 49ers general manager John Lynch predicted Thursday morning on KNBR, it could be a lot more complicated than that.

“It’s a unique situation, so there’s really no strategy,” Lynch said. “But I always come back to what is my responsibility, what is my job. My job is to look out for the best interest of the 49ers and as such, and in this particular situation, we are working with the NFL Management Council to navigate a different situation.”

In July 2025, the 49ers forfeited approximately $27 million in guaranteed money that Aiyuk would have received this year. The 49ers were able to take such action because Aiyuk failed to comply with the terms of the contract. He apparently did not file a complaint.

In December, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left team roster. He took no action to secure reinstatement until he recently hired Rosenhaus as his agent.
