Brian Schottenheimer, Cowboys head coach I tried to explain his decisions in the final 28 seconds of Sunday’s loss to the Ravens in Rio, but the guy running the show in Dallas made it clear Tuesday that those explanations fell on deaf ears.
Team owner Jerry Jones said there was “no explanation you’re happy with” for the way the Cowboys went from going from first down at the one-yard line to losing on a last-second field goal by Ravens kicker Tyler Loop. In a press conference later in the day, Schottenheimer said he damaged the team’s chances with his decisions on a sequence that included a timeout with 14 seconds left, causing Dak Prescott to throw a ball on third down rather than try to put the ball in the zone goals and asking Brandon Aubrey to hit the ball deep after his tying basket.
“I didn’t do very well the last 28 seconds“Schottenheimer said. “When you talk about finishing the game – when you look at our two games that we lost, we didn’t finish – that was a big part of it. I felt like I over-coached Dak on the third try, which affected his decision-making a bit. And I let that flow into my decision to kick the ball. . . . I will take responsibility for it. That’s football and life, that’s what happens. I ruined our chances of winning this match. I will be better and I am better than that.
Schottenheimer said Jones “understands a mistake was made” and vowed “these things will not happen again” in the future. He also stressed that the entire team needs to be stronger in the fourth quarter if they want to avoid more painful losses in the future.
