Britain believes Iran was involved in an incident near an air base used by the United States, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said.

Residents were allowed to return home on Monday.

In an update Tuesday, counterterrorism police chief Laurence Taylor said no explosives were found in three vans belonging to the suspects, although “a quantity of gasoline” was recovered.

“These vehicles have been the subject of a thorough examination, with the support of military and forensic experts, and we can confirm that no improvised explosive devices have been found,” he said, adding that investigators had searched properties in London.

In the UK, police can generally detain people for up to 24 hours before having to charge or release them, although officers can request an extension to this time if they suspect a serious crime has been committed. Suspects arrested under the terrorism law can be detained without charge for up to 14 days.

Tuesday’s update comes after President Donald Trump told reporters he was disappointed in the decision to release the men on bail.

“I’m just disappointed that they caught terrorists. They did a good job and then they kind of let them go,” he said, adding: “How can you give bail to a terrorist?”

Asked if it was a long-standing investigation, Trump replied: “A long-standing investigation. Yes, we were involved in it.”

“They released them on bail. I suppose they did, they monitored them closely. But they were serious, very bad people, and they shouldn’t have done that,” he added.

Burnham said on Wednesday that the men had been released with the “strictest possible bail conditions”, telling the BBC: “The authorities have the strongest grip and tightest control, and I can assure you of that.” »

Separately, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the incident “clearly involved the hands of a foreign actor” — an allegation that British officials had not confirmed before Burnham’s comments Wednesday.

Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer, authorized the US to use its bases for “specific and limited” defensive operations against Iran. Earlier this year, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps told the semi-official Tasnim news agency that “any base used to facilitate aggression against Iranian territory is considered a legitimate target,” specifically citing bomber flights taking off from Fairford.
