BYU, Utah football teams in AP top 10 together for first time – Deseret News
There isn’t much notable history that the BYU-Utah football rivalry hasn’t already made, but both programs checked one new thing off the list on Sunday.
For the first time, both teams are ranked simultaneously in the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25 poll, with BYU at No. 2 and Utah at No. 10 this week.
The rankings come as both teams are among six FBS teams still undefeated in 2026, both with a 6-0 record.
Although both teams have each been in the top 10 over the years, according to Sports Reference, there have only been three seasons prior to this one in which both teams reached the top 10 in the rankings at any time during a season, each having occurred in the last 18 years; two (other than this year) occurred in the last five years.
In 2008, BYU was in the top 10 in weeks 6-8 (ranked 8th, 9th and 9th) before falling out of the top 10 and finishing the season ranked 25th. Utah reached the top 10 in Week 10 and stayed there the rest of the season, finishing at No. 2 after beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.
Most recently, both teams spent just one week each in the top 10 in 2021, with BYU appearing in Week 6 and Utah in Week 15. Utah finished the season ranked 12th, while BYU finished ranked 19th.
Most recently, before this week, the teams each spent some time ranking in the top 10 in 2024. Utah was only there for Week 5 at No. 10 and finished the season at No. 16, while BYU was there for three weeks from Week 10 to Week 12 before finishing the season at No. 13.
Overall, this is the 15th season in which BYU has appeared in the top 10 in the AP rankings, while it is the 11th time Utah has done so.
