The Caleb Flynn murder trial has it all: testimony about a secret affair between church members, thousands of deleted texts, lies to the FBI and curiously silent pet dogs.
What’s missing from the trial is the murder weapon.
The absence of the gun used to fatally shoot Ashley Flynn played a significant role in the case of Caleb Flynn, the former “American Idol” contestant and church cult leader accused of murdering his wife in February.
Flynn, 40, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder. He told investigators he kept a handgun in the center console of his truck, but that console was open when police arrived at the family’s Ohio home, and the gun was never found.
In its opening statement, the prosecution said recovery of the gun was not necessary to secure a conviction, but the defense said its absence demonstrated the weakness of the prosecution’s case.
“They can’t show you what gun killed Ashley. They can’t show you if Caleb had a gun in his hand that night. They can’t show you that Caleb pulled the trigger,” said defense attorney Emily Smith.
The murder weapon is of course important evidence, but legally it is not required to obtain a guilty verdict. For example, Scott Peterson was convicted of murder without a weapon in evidence. Prosecutors instead relied on circumstantial evidence to make their case, including a secret affair and undermining his alibi.
CNN legal analyst Joey Jackson said the lack of a weapon had “very little” impact on Flynn’s case.
“Of course, it’s not ideal to not have a murder weapon, but at the end of the day, there are so many other things that you can use that I think can support your case, and in this particular case, that’s exactly what they do,” he said.
Similarly, in Flynn’s trial, prosecutors relied heavily on motive: Flynn’s secret affair with a younger church colleague, his “dark and hateful” texts fantasizing about murdering his wife, and his financial involvement in his wife’s family affairs. They also tried to unravel Flynn’s story about a mysterious intruder who broke into the house, stole his gun, shot and killed his wife and fled into the night.
“People are lying. The evidence is not,” prosecutor Paul Watkins said.
Romantic and financial motive
Prosecutors focused on Flynn’s romantic and financial motivations for wanting to kill his wife and getting away with it.
Alleigha Botner, who had a year-and-a-half affair with Flynn, was the key witness to the romantic motive. Reading more than 100,000 texts, the 24-year-old said Flynn repeatedly said he “hated” his wife, referred to her with the derogatory term “douche” and dreamed of killing her.
“I just want her to die and go away,” Flynn wrote to Botner in early 2025.
“Last night I cried until 4 a.m. literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail,” he wrote on August 22, 2025.
These texts were deleted from Flynn’s phone and Botner admitted that she initially lied to the FBI about the affair.
Phone records show Flynn was at his and Ashley’s house at the time of the murder. And in his text messages to Botner, Flynn said he planned to tell Ashley he was leaving her that evening.
“I need to get rid of the shower so I can start completely free and give you everything I can,” he wrote to Botner.
Other witnesses testified about Flynn’s financial and family motivation.
Flynn worked for his stepfather’s flooring and furniture company and made about $200,000 a year, Ashley’s sister testified. He also feared losing full custody of his two daughters, he said in text messages with Botner.
A divorce would therefore jeopardize his job, his children and his reputation. However, a random murder would not be the case, as prosecutors had theorized.
“If his plan to murder Ashley and frame it as if an intruder had done it were to succeed, Caleb would also be a victim,” Watkins said in his opening statements. “He would keep his mistress, have his daughters all the time. He would benefit financially, keep his lucrative job working for Ashley’s family business, and keep his position as worship leader.”
On the other hand, the defense said that a motive and an affair do not constitute an argument. Smith, the defense attorney, acknowledged that Flynn was “easy to hate” but said that didn’t prove anything.
“A man can fail as a husband without being a murderer, and a man can make selfish decisions without committing a crime,” she said.
The prosecution’s other main goal was to undermine Flynn’s story that an intruder killed his wife.
In his 911 call and in interviews with police, Caleb Flynn said he was lying in his daughters’ bedroom when he heard a gunshot. He got up and noticed the side door to his garage was open, as was the center console of his truck, where he stores his gun, he said. He then went to the bedroom and found Ashley in a pool of blood with two gunshot wounds, he said.
“Someone broke into my house – someone broke into my house and shot my wife,” he said at the start of a 911 call at 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 16.

Caleb Flynn called 911 to report that his wife had been shot.
However, several law enforcement investigators said the crime scene did not match that story.
For one thing, the garage side door was taken into court to show the jury. The door handle had been broken, but the door showed no damage consistent with a break-in, such as marks of force or force, Det. Lt. Jason Moore of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
“It was not what I expected in a forced entry scenario,” he said.
Flynn’s claim that he was lying in his daughters’ bedroom also came under scrutiny.
The bottom bunk of the girls’ bunk bed was filled with stuffed animals, photos show, leaving no room “for anyone other than maybe a small child,” said David Hammond, a special agent with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Additionally, Flynn told his mistress that he was lying on the couch when he heard the gunshot, she testified.
Additionally, there were no signs of an intruder leaving the house. About an hour after police arrived at the Flynn home, law enforcement deployed a drone and police dog in hopes of finding the suspects, but found nothing.
The dog handler said he and his dog, Haze, were leaving footprints in the wet ground outside the house, but they did not see any other footprints leaving the area. He ordered his dog to look for human scent near the garage side door and follow it, and the dog immediately went through the door of the house, he said.
The curious case of Flynn’s two pet dogs at night also provided key evidence, much like in the famous Sherlock Holmes story. The golden squiggles always barked when someone approached the house, said Ashley’s father, Todd Smith.
“Nothing makes sense to me,” Smith testified. “Why would someone break in, get in the truck, get in there, shoot my daughter, then run away? If it was a burglary, why didn’t they go around the whole house?”
“I wondered, ‘How the hell did this happen and these dogs don’t go crazy?’” he said.
