Caleb Flynn, the former ‘American Idol’ contestant, sentenced to life without parole for the murder of his wife

The prosecution’s star witness was Caleb Flynn’s former mistress, Alleigha Botner, who testified for hours about their nearly two-year affair and read aloud dozens of messages they exchanged — including several in which he expressed hatred for his wife and wished for her death.
Ohio prosecutors argued that Flynn’s affair with another cult leader motivated him to fatally shoot his wife in their Tipp City home in February.
Botner, 24, testified that she met Flynn at church when she was a 21-year-old intern and that he volunteered on the worship team. Their relationship became intimate in the spring of 2024, she said, and the two began going on dates in other cities and using various messaging apps to hide their relationship from his wife.
Prosecutors said Flynn and his mistress exchanged more than 100,000 messages in a year. Botner read several aloud, including some in which Flynn expressed hatred for his wife and several in which he wished for her death.
In a text from August 2025, a few months before his wife’s murder, Flynn wrote: “I was up until 4 a.m. crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail. » That same day, Botner told Caleb Flynn not to kill his wife, but to divorce her.
Botner said she gave Flynn several deadlines to leave his wife, but he missed them all, saying he didn’t want to hurt his two young daughters. In a series of messages to Botner on Feb. 15 — the day before Ashley was found — Flynn said he planned to tell his wife he wanted to leave her.
When she learned of Ashley’s death the next morning, Botner said her heart started beating harder. “It seemed like too much of a coincidence that the day he divorced her, she suddenly died,” she testified.
Later that day, Flynn and Botner met at his in-laws’ house, where members of their church were gathered. When Botner arrived, Flynn hugged her, she testified.
“This didn’t happen like we thought, did it?” » Flynn said, according to his testimony.
Botner said she thought she was in love with Flynn during their relationship, testifying that she wanted him to be her husband. However, when asked what she thinks of Flynn now, Botner replied: “I hate him…because I believe he murdered his wife.” »
